Reading the numbers
- Pilots online is everyone connected as a pilot, on the ground or in the air, from Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D or any other simulator.
- Arriving and Departing count filed flight plans to or from that airport. They include flights still on the ground.
- ATC open lists airports with a controller online. DEL is Clearance, GND Ground, TWR Tower, APP Approach and DEP Departure.

Frequently asked questions
How many pilots are on VATSIM right now?
The number at the top of this page is every pilot connected to VATSIM at this moment, on the ground or in the air, from any simulator. The count under it is the controllers online.
How are the busiest airports counted?
Each airport is ranked by the flights arriving plus the flights departing, taken from the flight plans pilots filed. A pilot with no flight plan is not counted at any airport, so the totals here are lower than the pilots online.
How do I know where ATC is open?
The ATC open list shows airports with a controller online, with the positions in use: DEL is Clearance, GND Ground, TWR Tower, APP Approach and DEP Departure. Center positions cover a wide area rather than one airport, so they count as controllers but are not listed here.
How often do these numbers update?
About once a minute while this page is open. They come from the public VATSIM data feed. The page pauses after 15 minutes without input and resumes when you move the mouse or tap.
